Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Compounds comprising hydroxydiarylketone groups linked by methylene groups are obtained by reacting formaldehyde with one or more hydroxydiarylketones of formula R-CO-R<SP>1</SP>. where R and R<SP>1</SP>are the same or different and are phenyl or naphthyl groups, at least one of which has at least one hydroxyl substituent and at least one of which has at least one unsubstituted position ortho or para to the hydroxyl group, in the presence of an acidic or alkaline catalyst. The reaction mixture may include another phenolic compound. In examples a dimer and higher polymers are prepared by reacting formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde with 2 - hydroxy - 4 - n - octyloxybenzophenone, 2 - hydroxy - 5 - methylbenzophenone and 2,4 - dihydroxy - benzophenone, in the presence of toluene-p-sulphonic acid and sodium hydroxide; in one instance phenol is included.
