[Also in Division C3] Perfluorophenylene compounds of formula Cl(C 6 F 4 ) n Cl, where n is 2 or more, in which in one and the same molecule some of the linkages between adjacent C 6 F 4 units are in the meta position and some in the para position, the compounds being terminated at each end by chlorine atoms, are prepared by heating a mixture of 1,3-dichlorotetrafluorobenzene and 1,4-dichlorotetrafluorobenzene with activated copper. The materials may be heated without a solvent in a sealed tube at 250‹ to 400‹ C., or in a solvent at atmospheric pressure at 150‹ to 250‹ C. Examples are given.
