Specified compounds include ethyl acetoxy formate, ethyl benzoyloxyformate, phenyl benzoyloxyformate, benzyl phenylacetoxy formate and methyl 3-methylphenylacetoxy formate. The compound may be formed in situ, e.g. by the reaction of chlorocarbonate with an organic carboxylic acid. The reaction may take place in the presence or absence of a solvent or non-solvent and in the presence of an accelerator, e.g. an amine, a Friedel-Craft catalyst, a metal alkoxide, an organic carboxylic acid, a lower alcohol, or a salt.
