Abstract

1,272,733. Cyclic ether lactones. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Nov., 1970 [20 Jan., 1970], No. 2730/70. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of formula wherein R 1 to R 6 are the same or different and represent H or hydrocarbyl groups, are prepared by reacting a vicinyl glycol and an α-# unsaturated nitrile to form an addition compound of formula HO.CR 2 R 3 .CHR 1 .O .CR 4 R 5 .CHR 6 .CN, this then either being reacted with anhydrous hydrogen halide in an anhydrous organic solvent to form the corresponding cyclic iminoether hydrogen halide which is then hydrolysed, or the addition compound is hydrolysed at the nitrile function to form a corresponding carboxylate derivative which is caused to undergo internal lactone formation in a basic reaction medium.
