Abstract

Poly - (1,3 - dicarbomethoxy - 2 - butanone) having the formula shown in Fig. 15 is prepared by adding a few drops of piperidine to a cooled solution of dimethyl - b - oxoglutarate and aqueous formalin in methanol. <FORM:1011978/C3/1> <FORM:1011978/C3/2> Poly - (ethylene - a ,a 1 - diacetyl - glutarate having the formula shown in Fig. 16 is prepared Poly - (ethylene - a a 1 - diacetyl - glutarate) having the formula shown in Fig. 16 is prepared by allowing a solution of ethylene bisacetoacetate and aqueous formalin in ethanol to stand for four days at room temperature.ALSO:Compounds of the general formula R1-CO-CH(R)-CH(R2)-CH(R)-CO-R1 wherein R is hydrogen or an aliphatic carboxylic acyl radical or a group of the formula -CONR6R7 (where R6 and R7 are hydrogen or alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, substituted aryl heterocyclic groups or together complete a heterocyclic ring, or R6 is H and R7 is NH2), R1 is alkyl, alkoxyl or hydrazino and R2 is hydrogen or alkyl, are prepared by reacting an aldehyde R2CHO with a reactive methylene compound of the formula R1-CO-CH2-R. Examples are given of the reaction of formalin with reactive methylene compounds in which R1 is methyl, ethyl, pivalyl, methoxy, ethoxy or hydrazino, and R is hydrogen, acetyl, propionyl, carbomethoxyacetyl, CONR6R7 where R6 and R7 complete a piperidyl ring, or -CONH2 which may be unsubstituted, di-substituted with methyl or ethyl groups or by a methyl and a phenyl group, or mono-substituted by phenyl, tolyl, methoxyphenyl, trimethoxyphenyl, carboxyphenyl, sulphophenyl, fluorophenyl, ethyl butyl, benzyl, phenethyl, cyclohexyl, a -pyridyl (or its methyl p-toluene sulphonate), or NH2. Examples also are given of the reaction of acetaldehyde with reactive methylene compounds in which R1 is methoxy or ethoxy and R is acetyl or carbomethoxyacetyl.
