Abstract

1,050,702. Carbon electrodes. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 20, 1964 [Dec. 4, 1963], No. 42789/64. Heading C1A. A coke composition, for the manufacture of prebaked or Soderberg electrodes, consists of a major proportion of particles from 200 to 500 microns and some particles between 25 and 75 microns. The coke particles are prepared by thermal decomposition of a hydrocarbon in a fluidized bed of coke particles at a temperature of 1800-2500‹ F. A carbonaceous binder is used which may be in the range 9-13% by weight for a prebaked electrode and 18-24% for a Soderberg electrode. The ratio of coarse coke to fine coke may be in the range 1 : 1 to 5 : 1 parts by weight. In the preparation of a prebake electrode from 15 to 30 weight per cent of electrode butts, recovered from spent electrodes, of particle size # to ¥ inch may also be present in the composition. The prebaked electrodes are prepared by slowly heating to 2000‹ F. over a period of 48 hours.
