Abstract

The light emission of an object such as the sun or a lamp or the transmission of atmospheric vapours at two wavelengths is compared using a photo-cell receiving light through a narrow band interference filter which is oscillated between a position in which the incident light makes a substantial angle of incidence with it and another position in which it makes a small angle of incidence, just sufficient to eliminate undesirable reflections from the filter surfaces. The filter is mounted on a wire suspension and oscillated at the natural frequency of the combination. The different transmissivities of the filter in the two positions is compensated by a waveform generated in synchronism with the oscillation.
