Abstract

An article having a rigid, solid, non-porous surface, such as a glass, metal or lacquered metal article, is temporarily protected by applying thereto a water-resistant film of a composition consisting essentially of a copolymer of 10 to 20% by weight of an α,(#-ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, and the balance by weight of at least one ester having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or methyl and R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, optionally containing up to 23% by weight of the total of copolymerizod > C = CH 2 monomer, e.g. styrene or vinyl toluene, and optionally containing a pigment, or of an ammonium or amine salt of the composition, and the film is subsequently removed from the article by the use of a dilute alkaline solution. Acids specified are acrylic and crotonic acids and their alpha- C 1-4 -alkyl derivatives. The composition may be applied as an aqueous solution of the ammonium or amine salt (including hydrazine salt) of the copolymer or as a solution of the copolymer in an organic solvent, which may be an alcohol, alcohol-ether, ester, ketone or aromatic hydrocarbon. In the examples ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid are copolymerized in the presence of tertiary dodecyl mercaptan in aqueous dispersion using ammonium persulphate as the catalyst. Zinc ammonium acetate or strontium chromate are included in the composition in two of the examples. An alkaline medium for removing the composition is also disclosed.
