Abstract

1,049,853. Variable frequency oscillation. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Sept. 12, 1963 [June 14, 1962], No. 22898/62. Heading H3A. In a variable frequency oscillation generator including an A.F.C. system, of the type described in Specification 1,024,427, in which a coarse frequency control arrangement including means for altering the reactance presented by a switchable reactor unit to the oscillator frequency determining circuit, and a fine frequency control including a phase comparator, are provided, the coarse control is modified to include a switchable series of capacitors having values proportioned to the power series of 2. The circuit up to the output from gates 14, 15 is identical to that described in Specification 1,024,427 and provides on line 16 a number of pulses proportional to the difference in frequency between the reference pulses derived from the fixed divider 2 and those derived from the controlled oscillator via variable divider 6. A signal is also provided on line 26 indicative of the sign of the error. The pulses on line 16 are applied to a 12-stage stepping register 23 and the first pulse to arrive operates the first stage of the register which provides an output pulse to switch bi-stable circuit 24(1) to a state in which it opens transistor gate 21(1) and connects capacitor 20(1) in the oscillator frequency determining circuit. If on arrival of the second pulse the error is in the same direction capacitor 20(1) remains in circuit and the second pulse switches capacitor 20(2) into the circuit, however if after the addition of capacitor 20(1) the sense of the error changes the signal on line 26 changes and opens the gates 25 whereby the second pulse in addition to switching capacitor 20(2) into circuit also switches bi-stable circuit 24(1) back to its initial state and removes capacitor 20(1) from the circuit. The capacitors 20(1) &c. have values proportional to a descending power series of 2.
