Abstract

Powdered oxycellulose is made by oxidizing a natural or a regenerated cellulose in an aqueous medium so as to introduce into the cellulose molecule from more than one atom to two hundred atoms of oxygen for every hundred anhydroglucose units. The oxidized cellulose is removed from the aqueous medium, washed with an aqueous solution of a neutralizing agent, washed with water until free from water-soluble contaminants, introduced into a volume of water to form a suspension, mechanically disintegrated while in the form of a suspension, e.g. by means of a colloid mill, and dried as by freeze-drying or spray-drying, to convert it into a fine dry powder. The oxidized cellulose may be subjected to acid hydrolysis while in the form of a dispersion prior to the mechanical disintegration step. The cellulose material may be in the form of alkali cellulose and may be oxidized by passing air through it after it has been moistened with an aqueous solution of a catalyst such as sodium sulphide, hydrogen peroxide or a manganese salt. Alternatively the cellulose material may be oxidized with an aqueous solution of an oxidizing agent such as a hypochlorite, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, a permanganate, a chromate, a dichromate, a periodate, nitrogen peroxide or lead tetraacetate.
