Abstract

1,049,601. Seaming. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Dec. 10, 1964 [Jan. 31, 1964], No. 4326/64. Heading B3J. In a machine for double seaming a can end to a can body of the type having a chuck 2 and two seaming rollers 4, 5, skidding between the can (not shown) and seaming rollers 4, 5 is prevented by driving each seaming roller by frictional contact with the chuck at a point disposed radially from the axis 26 of the roller by a distance equal to the mean operative radius 27 of the seaming groove 28, using a flange and groove connection. In a first embodiment the chuck 2 is provided with a tapered flange 20 having an inclined face 22 and the seaming roller is provided with a groove 21, contact being made between the corner 24 of the groove and the inclined face 22 of the flange. Alternatively, the groove 21 may be provided with a thrust ring (Figs. 7, 11, not shown) which contacts the flange 20 on the chuck 2. In a second embodiment the chuck 2 is provided with a groove having inclined sides and which is contacted by the corners of a flange on the seaming roller. The invention may be applied to machines in which the chuck rotates and the seaming rollers are held against the chuck or in machines in which the chuck is stationary and the seaming rollers gyrate around the chuck.
