Abstract

1380410 Making packing WHESSOE Ltd 1 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 56016/71 Heading F2B A seal 3, e.g. of annular or strip-like form is located in a recess 2 in a holder 1 by positioning the seal 3 in register with the recess 2, applying a force to a transverse portion of the seal 3 during and/or after insertion of the seal 3 into the recess 2, and, simultaneously with the force application, relatively moving the holder 1 and means for applying the force so that the force is applied progressively along the seal 3 The force may be applied directly to the seal 3 or through deformation of the holder 1. The seal 3 may be of nylon, preferably with a fluorocarbon insert, and the holder 1 may be of steel A circular holder 1 may be rotated coaxially on a table 4, Fig 2, one or more rollers 6 acting to force the seal 3 into the recess 2. Alternatively, Fig. 6, rollers 7 may act to deform the holder 1 to retain the seal 3, the rollers 7 being on vertical axes or inclined, Fig. 7 (not shown). Further, Fig. 8, a grooved roller 9 may act on outer portions of the holder 1. Machining means (not shown) may be provided for producing a required profile.
