Abstract
1,049,536. Arc blow torches. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Sept. 27, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962], No. 36911/62. Heading H5H. An induction plasma torch comprises a quartz tube 10 mounted in a brass block 11 by 0-rings 12. An inlet 13 is connected to a source, not shown, of oxygen which is delivered radially into the tube 10 so as to ensure turbulence. A tube 14 is sealed to the block 11 by an 0-ring 15 and a bottom brass block 16 is sealed to the tube 10 by an 0-ring 19 and to the tube 14 by an 0-ring 18. The annular passage between the tubes is used for water-cooling via an inlet pipe 17 and outlet pipe 20. Surrounding the tube 14 is a radio-frequency coil of 5 turns of small bore copper tubing 21 fed from a high voltage oscillator, Fig. 3 (not shown), fed with alternating current at 10,000V. peak to peak, and at a frequency of 2 to 5 megacycles, the energy transfer being 25kw./hr./ 1000 cubic feet of gas at standard temperature and pressure. The plasma is initiated on starting up with argon, by an electrode 35 of copper or graphite; the argon being gradually replaced by oxygen. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the electrode 35 is mounted on an insulated portion of the block 11 and the block 16 is extended to form a flanged nozzle.
