Abstract

Organic or inorganic salts of a tertiary amine Nr1R2R3, where R1, R2 and R3 are independently methyl or CR1R11R111 and R1, R11 and R111 are Cl-4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl and R1, R2 and R3 are not all methyl, are used as latent curing catalysts for aminoplast resins. The only amines specified are 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1,3-propane diol, tris hydroxy methyl dimethylamino methane, 4-dimethylamino-4-methyl-2 pentanol-1 and 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl propanol, the hydrochloride and p-toluene sulphonate of which are used in the examples. Reference is made to U.S.A. Specification 2,326,727 which discloses salts of t-monoamines or t-alkylolamines in general and Specification 596,153 which, discloses salts of trimethylamine. Various aminoplasts are mentioned; they may be modified or plasticized with thiourea, toluene sulphonamide, sucrose, benzene sulphonamide, substituted guanamines, glucosides, carbamates or polyhydroxy compounds. Applications.-The latent-catalysed resins may be used to prepare decorative laminates from impregnated and dried sheets of alphacellulose paper, viscose rayon paper, or glass, cotton, wool or synthetic fibre cloth, e.g. as an assembly of such sheets or as a laminate of (1) a rigid substrate, e.g. plywood, fibre board or a phenol-formaldehyde impregnated laminate, (2) an aminoplast impregnated paper print sheet and (3) an aminoplast-impregnated overlay sheet. They may also be used for postformable laminates, e.g. of crepe paper; plastic dinner ware; oil, water or air filters of bonded fibres; orthopaedic resins and plywood.
