Abstract
1,049,327. Electron microscopes. PHILIPS ELECTRONICS & PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES CORPORATION. July 5, 1963 [July 5, 1962], No.26756/63. Heading H1D. In an electron microscope in which the electron beam from the gun strikes the target and is then focused on to a luminous window, the conical walls of the focusing electromagnets are so shaped that they cannot be struck by fringing electrons over most of their length; each of the cylinders forming the column has a frustoconical axial bore pointed towards the gun, the apex of the cone being nearer to the cone than the pole faces of the adjacent magnetic lens. This reduces the build-up of stray charges from oil vapours, dust particles &c. on the column walls. The tubular members, forming the conical walls of the focusing magnet, may be slid into the central channel of the apparatus, spaced by non-magnetic members and secured by a locking nut. Vacuum seals may be made between the ferromagnetic members 62, 53, 81, 83 (the Figure, not shown) &c. by ring gaskets 81, and the tube evacuated from both ends through the pipe 86. Stigmator coils 41 and 42 are held in the non-magnetic member 46 adjacent the specimen. A camera may be mounted in the tube.
