Abstract

Detergent tablets which disintegrate readily in water but which have good fracture strengths when dry are obtained by compressing a particulate mixture comprising an anionic or non-ionic detergent and discrete particles of a condensed phosphate which is hydrated to an extent of 30-100%, preferably 100%. The condensed phosphate, which suitably comprises 15-60%, preferably 40-60%, by weight of the tablet is generally pentasodium tripolyphosphate and/or tetrasodium pyrophosphate, and is usually present in a ratio to the detergent of 2-25:1 by weight. The detergent may be soap, sodium tetrapropylene, benzene sulphonate, alkyl sulphate, fatty acyl isothionate or methyl taurate, or ethylene oxide condensates with fatty alcohols or with alkylphenols. Sodium silicate (Na2O:SiO2=1 : 2), sulphate (anh.), perborate and carboxymethyl cellulose, coconut ethanolamide, brighteners and perfume may also be included.
