Abstract
A detergent composition containing hydrated alkali metal tripolyphosphate is prepared by heat drying an aqueous slurry containing at least 5% trimetaphosphate and sufficient strong base to give 2 mole equ. OH- per mole of trimetaphosphate to be converted, which is preferably at least one-third of that present. The product may contain 10-75% tripolyphosphate, at least 60% of which is hydrated. The base may be an alkali metal carbonate, silicate, orthophosphate, oxide or hydroxide, or an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, or an organic quaternary ammonium hydroxide. The slurry may also contain other alkali metal phosphates, e.g. pyro-, tripoly-(Form II), tetrapoly-, hexameta-, and ortho-phosphates. Surface-active agents which may be included are Na and K salts of fatty acids, alkylonyl sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, fatty alkylamides, alcohol-alkylene oxide condensates, and alkylphenol-alkylene oxide condensates (examples given, which include propylene oxide condensates). Other substances which may be present are alkali metal hexametaphosphates, sulphates, silicates and perborates, carboxymethylcelluloses, polyvinylalcohols, and organic bleaching agents. The process may comprise mixing the slurry, preferably at above 50 DEG C., and adding the trimetaphosphate or base last, and heat drying at 120-375 DEG C. in a steam or hot flue-gas heated drum drier or spray drier.ALSO:Hydrated alkali metal tripolyphosphate is prepared by heat drying an aqueous slurry containing at least 5% of an alkali metal trimetaphosphate and sufficient strong base to give 2 mole equ. OH- per mole of trimetaphosphate to be converted, which is preferably at least 1/3 of that present. The base may be an alkali metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, silicate with SiO2/M2O ratio of less than 2, or orthophosphate; or an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide; or an organic quaternary ammonium hydroxide. The trimetaphosphate may be granules, flakes, or powder, and 80% should pass through 100 US sieve. The slurry may contain at least 10% water, and other alkali metal phosphates, e.g. tripoly (form II), tetrapoly-, hexameta-, pyro-, and ortho-phosphates. The process, which may be continuous, comprises mixing the slurry preferably at above 50 DEG C., and adding the trimetaphosphate or base last, then heat drying at 120-375 DEG C. in a steam or hot flue gas heated drum drier, or spray drier. The slurry may also contain surface active agents, detergent builders, and bleaches; examples of which are listed.
