Abstract

Reinforced porous materials are manufactured by impregnating the interconnected cells of a resilient polyurethane foam material with a fluid composition capable of being hardened by heating, and heating the impregnated material to form a substantially rigid structure. The density of the foam should suitably lie in the range of from 0.25 to 15 pounds per cubic foot. The hardenable composition must be fluid at the time of impregnation at temperatures between 50 DEG C. and 150 DEG C., but may be solid at normal temperatures. Suitable compositions are those based on an epoxy resin with an anine hardener, or a curable polyester resin with a peroxide initiator. Fillers, pigments and other colouring materials may be incorporated in the hardenable compositions. Divided silicas are mentioned as fillers. Solvents such as toluene may also be incorporated to facilitate impregnation.
