Abstract

1,048,727. Curling lips upon thermoplastic articles. METAL BOX CO.- Ltd. March 26, 1965 [April 14, 1964], No. 15427/64. Heading B5A. Curled lips or edges are cold-formed on articles, e.g. containers, of a thermoplastic material having a shore D hardness of 70-94, the portions on which the lips or edges are formed having a thickness of 0À010-06À00 inch. In one embodiment (see Fig. 5, not shown), useful only in the 70-90 shore D range a revolving cool grooved disc 3b is pressed against, and run around, the edge of the article, and in a second embodiment useful in the full range (see Figs. 1 and 3, not shown), a grooved non-rotating cooled die is pressed against the edge of the article. Material suitable for use are ABS copolymers polypropylene, high density polyethylene, nylon, toughened polystyrene and general purpose polystyrene, the latter having a shore D member greater than 90 and may thus be formed only by a non-rotating die.
