Abstract

A mercury cleaning apparatus consists of a reservoir 3 containing dirty mercury, an elongated chamber 2 (containing cleaning agent and communicating with the reservoir via a capillary tube 4) and a small bore tube 8 extending from within the reservoir to a nozzle 9 in the upper part of the chamber. When a vacuum pump is connected at 10 mercury is drawn up the tube 8, discharged from the nozzle, falls through the cleaning agent and passes through the capillary tube 4 back into the reservoir. Clean mercury is removed from an outlet 5. The cleaning agent may be sulphuric acid to remove water or nitric acid to remove zinc.
