Abstract

1,048,028. Dispensing liquids by gaseous pressure. E. H. GREEN. Aug. 16, 1963 [June 10, 1963], No. 32582/63. Heading F1R. [Also in Division B2] A spray head, suitable for association with a pressurized container of the type having a valve plunger 62, Fig. 2, co-operating with an annular gasket 52 so as to seal the interior of the container, comprises a push button 78 having an integral depending stem 80 adapted to be inserted through a central hole in the gasket 52 and pushed into contact with a socket 72 in the plunger 62 in order to release the container contents, an insert 90 in the push button having an externally opening orifice 92 and providing a swirl-forming chamber 96, and a vertical passageway 104 in the stem interior. The passageway leads at its upper end to the swirler chamber via a cavity 84 and is provided adjacent its lower end with a side slot 108 which is blocked only when the plunger 62 is seated on the gasket 52, said passageway 104 being of slot-like configuration along most of its length, the width of the narrower dimension of the slot being of the same order as the width of the side opening 108. The stem 80 extends from a body portion 82 shaped to provide the cavity 84 and a central coaxial post 86 with a small tip 88. The interior of the insert 90 provides tangentially located entrance passageways 98 communicating with the square swirler chamber 96 and a circular swirler chamber 94 into which the tip 88 protrudes. An alternative swirler insert, Fig. 15, is provided with axial grooves 100<SP>1</SP>, a mixing chamber 96<SP>1</SP>, spirally or tangentially extending passageways 98<SP>1</SP>, and an outlet orifice 92<SP>1</SP>. The spray head is particularly suitable for atomizing insecticides or paints &c. using a low-expansion propellant such as air, nitrogen, nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide. In operation the push button 78 is depressed and the plunger 62 lowered against spring pressure so that a small portion of the slot 108 is exposed below the gasket 52 and pressurized mixture is forced into passageway 104. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the portion of the slot 108 entering the gasket 52 is strengthened by a gusset or strut.
