Abstract

1,047,988. Selective signalling. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. Feb. 28, 1964, No. 8513/64. Heading G4H. A force balancing system comprises a lever 10, to one end 16 of which a force to be measured is applied, and to the other end of which an electromagnetic counter force is applied, this force being produced by pulses of opposite polarity applied to two coils 44 and 36 by a pulse generator 46. When the lever is in its neutral central position the pulses applied to coils 44 and 36 are of equal amplitude, 100, and 101, Fig. 5, thus applying a zero resultant force to the lever, but as the lever moves away from its central position a D.C. voltage is superimposed upon the pulses through coil 36 (effectively shifting the datum of pulses 101) so that a resultant counter-balancing force is applied to the lever. The pulse generator 46 produces a sequence of pulses of o pposi polarity on a lead 45, each pulse being an integral multiple of a clock-pulse duration in duration and causing current to flow in opposite directions through coils 44 and 36. The pulse generator 46 also applies clock-pulses 103 to a line 52 when it is producing a positive pulse on lead 45, and to a lead 54 when it is producing a negative pulse. The pulse generator 46 produces pulses whose durations are determined in accordance with the potential across a capacitor 34 in such a way as to maintain the potential as small as possible. A measure of the force on the lever can be found by counting the pulses on line 52 positively and those on line 54 negatively.
