Abstract

A detergent composition comprises a watersoluble sulphonated detergent (a1) of formula <FORM:1047771/C4-C5/1> where R is C4- 20 alkyl, Y ic C:O.O, C:O.NH or C: O.NX1, X is H, C1-ta6 alkyl, -CH2CH(OH)CH2OH, -CH2CH(OH)CH2O(C1- 6-alkyl) or -(C2- 4 alkyleneoxy)n-H, wherein n is an integer of 1-=10, provided that X is not H when Y is C: O.O, X1 is X or H, M is a metallic ion (including basic salts), NH4, C2- 4 alkylol ammonium, C2- 4 alkylol C1- 4 alkyl ammonium, or (C2- 4 oxyalkyl)m C2- 4 alkylol ammonium, where m is an integer of 1-4 and n is the valence of M, the total number of carbon atoms in R and in any C-C chain in X being 8-24, and a further water-soluble detergent (a2) which consists of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, Zn, NH4 or C2- 4 alkylol ammonium salt of a sulphated C10- 22 fatty alcohol or oxyalkylated C10- 22 fatty alcohol. Typical (a1) compounds are sodium methyl a -sulphopalmitate, sodium methyl a -sulphostearimide, sodium ethylene glycol a -sulphopalmitate and zinc (tetraoxyethyl) ethylol a -sulphopalmitate and typical (a2) compounds are sodium lauryl sulphate, triethanolammonium lauryl sulphate, calcium lauryl sulphate and sodium tetraoxyethylated tallow alcohol sulphate. Other ingredients such as polyoxyalkylated alkyl phenols and thiophenols and salts of sulphated derivatives of these, salts of sulphonated alkylaryl compounds such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, alkaline builders, N-alkylol fatty acid amides, soaps, chelating agents, amine oxides and conventional hydrotroping agents such as sodium toluenesulphonate, sodium sulphate, carboxy-methylcellulose may also be added. Dry and liquid compositions, e.g. in water/ethanol, are described.
