Abstract

<PICT:1047137/C1/1> Baked or graphitized carbon bodies are produced by continuously forcing a carbonaceous mass through a zone in which it forms a resistance element in a closed electrical circuit and is heated thereby, and exerting a restraining force on the moving mass. The mass 6 which may be graphite flour, carbon black, calcined petroleum, resistor coke and/or anthracite, with or without 15-45 parts of a binder, e.g. pitch or a synthetic resin, per 100 parts of the mass, and which may be loose or preformed, is periodically fed into a reducing die 3, 4 and heated to 20-350 DEG C. by coils 5 or by hot gases. The extrusion die may alternatively have an expanding or constant cross-section, e.g. irregular, circular, or rectangular, or may change from one to the other, and tubes may be formed using a cylindrical mandrel, which may form part of the circuit. The mass is forced at 0.25-3 inches/minute by piston 1 into the baking zone where it is heated to 125-1300 DEG C. by passing an A.C. or D.C. current of 600-2000 amps. from transformer 13 through contacts 14 and 15. Resisting force may be exerted peripherally by frictional drag 16, or by the contacts, or axially e.g. by an hydraulic piston. The forward pressure may be 100-6000 p.s.i. and the back pressure 10-4000 p.s.i. The process may be started by heating up a rod of graphite ahead of the mass and extending between the two contacts. In the optional graphitization zone, the mass is surrounded by tubes 19a and 19b of graphite and steel respectively, containing e.g. carbon black 19, and is heated to 800-2900 DEG C. by passing current from transformer 17 through contacts 15 and 18. Finally the mass is cooled from 2900-300 DEG C. in a zone comprising graphite, steel, or copper 21 surrounded by water-cooled copper coils 50. It may be cut to length at 25-400 DEG C. Contact 14 may be of copper or steel, and contacts 15 and 18 of carbon, copper or graphite. Nitrogen is introduced through inlets 20, 20a and 20b, and volatiles escape at 12. In another embodiment, the downstream contacts are omitted and the current passed radially through the mass; various electrical arrangements are illustrated.
