Abstract

Thermoplastic compositions suitable for moulding comprise a blend of from 1 to 99% by weight of a polyamide thermoplastic resin and from 99 to 1% by weight of a copolymer of at least one alkyl methacrylate and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in a proportion of 1 to 20 equivalents of the acid to 100 moles of the total monomers in the copolymer. The copolymer may also comprise a small proportion of another monomer, e.g. alkyl acrylates, styrene, a -methylstyrene, p-phenylstyrene, butadiene, isoprene, vinyl acetate and butyrate, vinyl alkyl ethers, isobutylene, trichloroethylene, vinyl chloride and ethylenically unsaturated polyesters. Specified acid monomers containing 3-20 carbon atoms are acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, itaconic, maleic and fumaric acids, methyl hydrogen maleate and ethyl hydrogen fumarate. The polyamide may be derived from various dibasic acids and diamines (many examples are given) including cyclic compounds and amino-carboxylic acids or their cyclic lactams; preferred polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polycaprolactam and copolymers such as 66/610 nylon and 66/6 nylon of M.W. at least 2000. The compositions may include antioxidants, thermal stabilizers, pigments and 10-50% fillers, e.g. asbestos and glass fibres. In examples, methyl methacrylateethyl acrylate-methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymers, prepared from the appropriate monomers in aqueous dispersion using azobis-isobutyronitrile as catalyst and in the presence of n-butyl mercaptan as a telogen, are blended with various nylon polymers.
