Abstract

Polymer blends are made containing (A) a diene rubber/monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon-unsaturated nitrile copolymer blend of the type in which at least part of the copolymer has been made by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of the rubber, and (B) as an agent for improving the gloss of mouldings produced from the blend, 0.2-10% by weight of the blend of a polyalkylene glycol of molecular weight of 300-3000 or an alkyl ether or alkanoic ester thereof in which the alkyl or alkanoic group contains 1-20 carbon atoms. The examples describe blends in which: (i) the diene rubbers are polybutadiene and butadiene-styrene-ethylene dimethacrylate and butadiene styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, (ii) the monomers polymerized with the rubbers are styrene-acrylonitrile, styrene-methacrylonitrile-dibutyl fumarate and styrene - alphamethylstyrene-acrylonitrile mixtures, and (iii) the gloss-improving agents are polyethylene glycol 550, 1000, 1450 and 2050 and the monomethoxy, dibutoxy, monolauroxy, diacetate, distearate and monopalmitate derivatives thereof.
