Abstract

Polymerizable dyestuffs of the azo, anthraquinone and triarylmethane series contain a group of the general formula <FORM:1046751/C4-C5/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen o methyl. The dyes are made by reacting an unsaturated compound containing the above group and a functional reactive group, such as glycidyl methacrylate, glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl crotonate, N-vinyl glycidyl urethane, glycidyl vinyl sulphonate, isopropenyl isocyanate, N-vinyl-N1:N1-ethylene urea, acrylyl chloride or methacrylyl chloride with an azo, anthraquinone or triarylmethane dye containing a primary or secondary amino group, an alcoholic or phenolic hydroxy group or a carboxyl group, such as sodium 4-aminoazobenzene-41-sulphonate, 1:4 - diaminoanthraquinone, 1:4:5:8 - tetraaminoanthraquinone, 1 - amino - 4 - hydroxyanthraquinone, 1:4-diamino-5-nitroanthraquinone and magenta. The dyes may be polymerized to coloured polymers (see Division C3), if desired in the presence of fibres, films or mouldings (see Division D1).ALSO:Coloured polymers are made by homopolymerizing in solution, suspension or emulsion and in the presence of a free radical catalyst on azo, anthraquinone or triarylmethane dyestuff containing at least one group of the formula <FORM:1046751/C3/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen or methyl. The polymerizable dyes may, for example, be of the formula <FORM:1046751/C3/2> <FORM:1046751/C3/3> Other dyes are described. The polymerization may be conducted in the presence of fibres, films or mouldings to dye the same (see Division D1).ALSO:Fibres, films or mouldings of cotton, silk, wool, viscose rayon, cuprammonium rayon, acetyl cellulose, polyvinyl, polyvinylidene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyester, polyolefines and copolymers thereof are dyed by homopolymerizing in the presence of said fibre, film or moulding an azo, anthraquinone or triarylmethane dye containing a group of the formula:- <FORM:1046751/D1-D2/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen or methyl. The dyes may for example be of the formulae:- <FORM:1046751/D1-D2/2> or <FORM:1046751/D1-D2/3>
