Abstract

Steel strip is continuously galvanized by passing it through a molten zinc bath 2, then upwardly between a pair of coating rolls 10 into the atmosphere, then removing the free zinc from the strip surface by passing it upwardly under tension against a first wipe 36 above the bath surface 94, changing its direction and passing it against a second wipe 38 above the first, then passing it between a pair of opposed wipes 62 and 64, and then cooling the zinc coated strip S, e.g. in a cooling tower 96. The wipes may have a square main section, the opposed pair 62 and 64 having a longitudinal slot at each corner in which is arranged an asbestos wiper strip 72; the first pair of wipes 36 and 38 may have metal wiping surfaces. <PICT:1046695/C6-C7/1>
