Abstract

1,046,641. Handling packages. WHITWORTH GLOSTER AIRCRAFT Ltd. Oct. 22, 1962 [Sept. 1, 1961], No. 31551/61. Heading B8S. In a warehouse articles are kept in a set of shoots 12 and are released therefrom by respective wheels 11. Each wheel 11 is controlled by a cam-plate 13 operated by solenoid 14. The solenoid is included in an electric circuit to which an order signal is given to release a predetermined number of articles. When the signal is received, solenoid 14 operates to pull cam-plate 13 leftwards. This removes stop 16 from the wheel 11 to free it for rotation and at the same time the cam-plate 13 engages the wheel at 17 to give the latter an impulse in the clockwise direction. This causes the article which is resting against surface B to have an upward and forward movement and to be discharged, leaving the wheel turned at a 45 degrees angle. At this moment switch 18 (Fig. 5, not shown), in the electric circuit has been broken by the engagement of the wheel with the arm of switch 18. The cam-plate is now free. Accordingly the next article slides down shoot 12 and delivers a blow to wheel 11 in its 45 degrees position so that the wheel now completes its 90 degrees movement being secured in this position by spring 21 (Fig. 3, not shown). This second 45 degrees movement permits the wheel to engage cam-plate 13 at 19 and thus restore the cam-plate to its original position. The wheel 11 is now back in its original position, being held by stop 16 and the arm of switch 18 has also gone back to its original position as shown in Fig. 5 so that the mechanism is able to operate again if the order signal has -been for a plurality of articles. Wheel 11 also engages arm 23 of counter 20 so that the number of articles discharged is counted and arm 23 is so shaped that it prevents backward movement of wheel 11. The wheels 11 discharge on to an endless belt and all the endless belts discharge on to a common belt which automatically feeds the complete order for articles to the delivery point.
