Abstract

1,046,462. Carriageway lighting systems. H. H. OHNEMUS April 19, 1963 [April 21, 1962 (2)], No. 15442/63. Heading F4R. In a carriageway lighting installation of the type in which lighting units 1 are arranged along at least one of the kerbs of a carriageway and have light-emitting openings below the eye level of a vehicle driver, the principal direction of emission of light A is arranged to be obliquely downwards against the direction of movement of the traffic at an angle of 80 to 90 degrees with the vertical and 155 to 180 degrees with the direction of travel of the traffic, each lighting unit having a screen 2 arranged at a predetermined distance a from the unit 1 to shield a vehicle driver, light rays passing only below the lower edge of the screen 2. Fig. 4 shows a lighting unit 1 arranged with a height adjustable leg 9 and incorporating a reflector 4 and light emitting aperture 7. The screen 2 is supported on a height adjustable leg 8 and is arranged with its lower edge at the same level as the lower extremity of the aperture 7. The principal direction of emission of light A is in this instance at 88 degrees to the vertical and the light is projected on to the appropriate carriageway against the flow of traffic, and under the screen 2. The unit 1 may be disposed on the centre strip of a motorway, and a series of such units with screens 2 may be so disposed or disposed at the outside edges of the carriageways. The screens 2 may be augmented by one or two side screens, and by a top screen, which may all have light reflecting inside surfaces. The screens 2 may be replaced by a single continuous screen running parallel with the carriageway and serving the same purpose as the screens 2. Each lighting unit may contain one or a number of point source lamps, or a fluorescent or tungsten iodide lamp. Lighting units 21 with light-emitting apertures 25 may also be arranged in a recess 26, Fig. 21, at the sides of a tunnel or in a suitably screened rail at the edge of a bridge, or in a handrail. In Fig. 21, the screen is formed by a downwardly projecting edge 23 forming a channel 40 in which the light units 21 are disposed. The channel may be rectangular section as shown or trapezoidal or triangular. Reflecting coatings 30, 31 of light-coloured paint or tiles or aluminium foil may be disposed in the channel 40 and/or recess 26. In.a further embodiment, the bottom of the channel containing the lighting units may be downwardly inclined between each lighting unit and the next, the edge 23 being provided as before.
