Abstract

1,046,192. Door mats. CARBORUNDUM CO. Jan. 30, 1964 [March 14, 1963], No. 3958/64. Heading A4S. [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A fibrous door mat comprises a porous pad of randomly arranged curled animal hairs 8, 9, a deposit of cured elastomeric adhesive 10 covering the individual hair filaments to secure them together at their points of contact, and a film 12 of non- slip coating covering the adhesive. The adhesive coating 10 consists of natural or synthetic rubber, and the non-slip coating of an adhesive such as rubber-modified phenolic resins plasticized melamine or urethane resins or epoxy resins containing granules 11 of silica or natural or synthetic abrasives which are finely divided to avoid scratching. As an example mats are made from a web of a randomly distributed mixture of hog and cattle hair formed on a conveyer belt and passed beneath a spraying apparatus which applies to one surface and. after inversion, to the other surface of the web, neoprene latex which invests the individual hairs and the points of contact thereof, the web being heated to remove stickiness and compressed between rollers to a uniform thickness between spraying operations, and cured by heating after the second spraying. The web is then passed beneath spraying apparatus for penetration of the upper half by a dispersion of 100 parts by weight of pre-plasticized polyvinyl chloride and 100 parts by weight of finely divided flint in 500 parts by weight of water. After inversion, to treat similarly the other side, the web is cured by heat and cut into door mat sizes. Suitable dyes are added to either or both the adhesive coating and the non-slip coating.
