Abstract

Porous elements of predetermined pore radius are made by injecting molten material under pressure into the inter-granular spaces of a compressed powder "pre-form" of desired shape and known granule size, allowing the material to solidify under pressure, and eliminating the powder granules. The molten material may be a polymer of fluoroethylene propene. Flat or cylindrical shapes may be made. Two or more layers or powders of different grain size give rise to composite filters. Manufacture of tubular filters of an alloy of silicon and aluminium and of an alloy of nickel and phosphorous is described. The elements may be used for filtering liquids or gases and in processes for separating by gaseous diffusion.
