Abstract
A rigid panel comprises, by weight, between 83 and 98% of mineral matter, of which between 47 and 86% is interfelted mineral-wool fibres and between 14 and 53% shot particles, and between 2 and 17% of synthetic resin binder. The shot particles are no larger than 10 mesh, 5 to 8% of them are retained on a 30-mesh screen, 30 to 40% on a 50-mesh screen and 50 to 60% pass a 50-mesh screen. The panel has a density of between 4 and 70 lb/ft3. The binder may be of phenol-formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate or acrylic resin. The panel may be made by making a blanket of the interfelted fibres, shot particles and uncured binder, e.g. by air-laying, compressing the blanket, cutting it to size, and then heating and pressing several of the cut portions between the platens of a multi-platen press.
