Abstract

1,045,732. Treating and sowing seeds. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 17886/62. Headings AID and A2Q. Seed is mixed with a fluid matrix such as a gel, paste or a viscous fluid and distributed by a machine comprising a hollow coulter 20 which communicates with a pipe 21 connected to a rubber tube 23 which lies in an arcuate guide 24, the tube being squeezed by rollers 26 on a rotor 25 to propel the material along the tube. In a modification a series of hollow wheels are provided with spikes which penetrate into the ground and are connected to cylinders containing plungers to inject a small portion of the matrix and seed each time the spike penetrates the ground. In a further modification wheels or rollers are provided with fingers which collects a drop or lump of the matrix as it passes a feed roller. The matrix may be an aqueous gel or paste, comprising gelatine or sodium alginate and, if desired, a fertilizer, an insecticide, a fungicide, a bactericide, a bird repellant, an inoculant causing legumes to form nitrogen-fixing nodules, or a chemical preventing seed dormancy.
