Abstract

Granular adsorbents are made by kneading a mixture of finely divided carbon with a solution of a cellulose ester or a synthetic resin in a volatile solvent to form a plastic mass, shaping the plastic mass into granular form by mechanical means, and heating the granules to remove the volatile solvent and harden the granules. The temperature may be within the range 100 DEG to 300 DEG C. The heating may be sufficient partially to carbonize the polymeric binder material. The free carbon may have a pH of 5 to 7 and may be carbon black or carbon formed as a by-product in the manufacture of hydrogen by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, and having a particle diameter of 150 <\>rA to 200 <\>rA. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate and the synthetic resin may be polyacrylonitrile. The solvent may be methanol containing a minor proportion of acetone, methylene chloride, chloroform, dioxane or dimethyl formamide. The solution of the cellulose derivative or synthetic resin may have a concentration of 4 to 10% and the proportion of carbon may be 28 to 34% and of solution 72 to 66% in the plastic mass. The mixture may also contain finely divided silica, e.g. silica gel, or alumina or alumina-silica, preferably of particle size 600 <\>rA to 700 <\>rA, the ratio of carbon to silica being 65 to 75% of carbon to 35 to 25% of silica. In an example, 100 grams of byproduct carbon black having a particle diameter of about 200 <\>rA is kneaded at 20 DEG to 25 DEG C. with a 4 to 10% solution of cellulose acetate in dimethyl formamide, the proportion of cellulose acetate in the mixture being 15 to 17% that of the carbon black, the resulting plastic mass is formed into granules and maintained at 100 DEG to 120 DEG C. for about 30 minutes. In another example, 82 grams of finely divided free carbon are mixed with 180 c.c. of a 10% solution of polyacrylonitrile in dimethylformamide. The granulated mixture is passed through an oven having a temperature gradient of 100 DEG to 300 DEG C., the residence time of the granules in the oven being about 2 hours.
