Abstract

A fuel element comprising an outer can provided with longitudinal sets of parallel cooling fins is supported inside an annular metal jacket by a set of metal centring plates fixed to the jacket, e.g. by welding or bolting, and located along generating lines of its inner surface, each plate having at its lower end a flange engaging in a slot formed in a cylindrical end-piece on which the lower end of the element rests, the plates entering longitudinal grooves formed between the sets of fins on the fuel element can. Preferably, the fins are in herring-bone formation, the sectors of which are separated by longitudinal grooves. The jacket and supporting end-piece thus form a singleunit assembly constituting a " basket " in which the fuel element is axially engaged. The fixing of each centring plate to the jacket may be carried out solely in the upper part of the jacket or at points suitably distributed over the entire height of the plate. Each centring plate may comprise at its lower part an extension, enabling two successive jackets to be relatively centred when the jackets are superimposed end-to-end within a reactor duet.
