Abstract

1,155,350. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 22 May, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 24446/68. Heading G6C. A fuel assembly comprising a box 3 containing one or more bundles of fuel bins (not shown) has a solid cylindrical end-fitting 1 extending down from the box 3, the end-fitting 1 and the box 3 being coupled by a connecting element 2 through which at least one passageway 7 for the circulation of cooling fluid extends and the connecting element 2 bearing on a cylindrical support tube 9. Rounded bearing surfaces 12, 13 provide a leak-tight connection between the support tube 9 and the connecting element 2. The connecting element 2 is coupled to the end-fitting 1 by means of a dowel pin 5 and rigidly fixed to the box 3 by means of a weld fillet 6. A diagrid 10 for supporting all the fuel assemblies of a reactor core is formed by a pair of upper plates 8a, 8b and a lower plate 8c, between which plates the support tubes 9 extend. The end-fitting 1 is provided at its lower end 14 with a guiding device comprising a spherical bearing 15 which is applied in leak-tight manner against an annular shoulder 16 formed on the internal wall of the support tube 9. Below the shoulder 16 a nut 17 having a cylindrical head 18 is fixed in the support tube 9, the head 18 engaging in a recess in the lower end 14 of the end-fitting 1 to provide a restraining latch, the purpose of which is to permit the positioning of the fuel assembly only in the location for which it is specifically intended. The coolant which is at low pressure is admitted through apertures 11 in the support tube 9 located between the upper plates 8a, 8b of the diagrid 10 as indicated by the arrows F. In a modified fuel assembly for coolant at high pressure (Fig. 2, not shown), the support tube is provided with openings of larger cross-sectional area located between the lower plates 8b, 8c.
