Abstract

1,045,660. Gas liquefaction process. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Sept. 27, 1965 [Dec. 16, 1964], No. 41025/65. Heading F4P. Compressed gas, e.g. nitrogen, is liquefied by heat exchange at 36 with a liquid refrigerant, e.g. methane, having a boiling point below the critical temperature of the feed gaseous nitrogen and the liquid nitrogen is then expanded successively at valves 50, 60, 68 into separators 52, 62, 70 to form first, second and third recycle gaseous nitrogen streams which are re-combined by comprising the third stream at 86, removing the heat of compression by revaporizing liquid methane traversing a heat exchanger 90, adding to the second stream at a point 94, recompressing the combined third and second streams at 96, cooling in a heat exchanger 98 traversed by liquid methane being re-vaporized, adding to the first stream at a point 104 and the socombined recycle streams are recompressed at 106, cooled in a heat exchanger 108 traversed by liquid methane being re-vaporized and added at a point 34 to the feed nitrogen stream prior to its liquefaction in heat exchanger 36. Product liquid nitrogen at substantially atmospheric pressure is withdrawn from separator 70 through a line 80 and filters 82. Preliminary cooling of feed gaseous nitrogen is effected in heat exchangers 14, 16, 18 traversed by high pressure liquid methane and in a further heat exchanger 28 which together with heat exchangers 36, 90, 98, 108 are traversed by methane at atmospheric-pressure. Low pressure methane gas is compressed at 126 and added at a point 128 to high pressure gas and discharged through a line 134.
