Abstract

A refractory article of Ta, Nb, W or Mo or alloy based thereon has its surface protected against high temperature oxidation by an impervious coating of ZrB2 or TiB2 applied as a plasma spray at a temperature sufficient to at least surface-melt the diboride particles suspended in the spray. The diboride may be obtained by electrolytic deposition from a fused melt of alkali metal double fluoride of Zr or Ti and B. Prior to spraying, any oxide film on the surface may be removed by sand blasting or (electro) chemical etching. The coating is preferably multilayered.
