Abstract
A cement mix comprises a dry blend of sand, cement, water-dispersable polymer and a sequestering agent which is the pentasodium salt of diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid which is then homogenized with water and allowed to set. The water-dispersable polymer is produced by spray drying a mixture of an aqueous ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid terpolymer latex, octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol and calcium hydroxide.ALSO:A dry mixture of a particulate, water-insoluble, linear polymer and a water-dispersing agent therefore has polyvalent metal carboxylate groups disposed on the surface of the particles and chemically combined with the polymer and/or dispersing agent, which prevent coalescence of the polymer particles. The mixture may be produced by incorporating polyvalent metal ions into an aqueous suspension of a linear emulsion polymer and which contains carboxylate groups of formula-COOM where M is H, NH4 or an alkali metal, in the polymer and/or dispersing agent, and removing all the water from the polymer. At least 3% of the polymer units may contain the carboxylate group and the mixture may also contain a sequestering agent for the ions of the above polyvalent metal, e.g. the pentasodium salt of diethylene-triamine penta-acetic acid, tetra-sodium ethylenediamine tetra - acetate, tri-sodium N-hydroxyethylethylenediamine tri-acetate, sodium polyphosphate and the sodium salt of poly(vinyloxyethylamine diacetic acid). In an example an aqueous ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/itaconic acid terpolymer latex containing octylphenoxy-poly(40)ethoxy-ethanol and the half-amide/half-ammonium salt of a diisobutylene/maleic anhydride copolymer was treated with CaCl2 and the coagulated polymer was dried and pulverized. Other polymers exemplified are ethyl acrylate/styrene/methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid terpolymers and vinyl acetate/ethyl acrylate copolymer. Other dispersing agents exemplified are sodium dodecyl sulphate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, and a hydrolysed diisobutylene/maleic anhydride copolymer in its sodium salt form, and other flocculants are Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2 and Zn(OH)2.
