Abstract

1,045,519. Making electrical connections. AMP. Inc. Sept. 3, 1965, No. 37643/65. Heading B3A. [Also in Division B8] Lengths of insulated wire W are engaged in a conveyer 1 and each wire is brought into alignment with a continuously rotating coarse positioning wheel 6, whereupon the conveyer is stopped. The wire W enters between a pair of fingers 7 on the wheel periphery (Fig. 3, not shown), and opposite the wheel is a wire endsensing device (Fig. 4, not shown). The wire enters the device causing the fingers 7 to close over the wire which is then pulled through the sensing device until a bared end comes under a leaf spring and a microswitch is then opened and the wire released from the periphery of the wheel 6. The conveyer resumes its advance and the wire is passed to a fine-positioning wheel 21 which operates in conjunction with a sensing device as previously described. The conveyer 1 then advances the wire to a crimping station 22 where a connector T is crimped thereto. Alternatively, the wire may be fed axially into the crimping station. If a connector is required on the other end of the wire, it is passed to a wheel 23 which positions it roughly and then to positioning wheels 6<SP>1</SP>, 211 and crimping station 22<SP>1</SP> which operates as described previously. The wire is then deposited in a bin 24 by the conveyer 1. In an alternative embodiment the positioning wheels may be replaced by pairs of oppositely rotating drive rolls.
