Abstract
104,521. August, J. R. C. Feb. 7, 1916. Tilting-furnaces.-A furnace for heating articles of circular or approximately circular cross-section, such as billets, forgings, ball-bearing, races, &c., is tilted or moved intermittently so that the articles automatically roll through the furnace. In the construction shown, the furnace is mounted on an axis passing through or slightly above its centre of gravity, and is formed with one or more zig-zag passages 4, along which the articles 16 are caused to roll by tilting the furnace from the vertical alternately in opposite directions. A fireplace is provided in the lower part of the furnace, and the firing and ash-pit doors 13, 15 are preferably situated on the opposite side to the inlet shoot 7 and outlet door 9 for the articles. The products of combustion are taken off through a flue 11 which moves within a hood or enlargement on the fixed chimney flue. The furnace may be rocked by hand, or by gearing, which is automatically reversed when the furnace has been tilted to the desired extent, or by a steam cylinder moving over a fixed piston and supplied from an instantaneous generator in the fire. box. The rocking may be timed either by controlling the flow of water to the generator, or by a clock-work control for the valves of the cylinder. The furnace may be heated by gas burners.
