SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,981, dated July t, 1905. Application filed September 29, 1904. Serial No. 226,486.
Be it known that I, llnznmmA J Bor/ron, a citizen of the United States of America, re* Siding' at Edgewood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in furnaces; and the object of this invention is the provision of novel means for the heating of air and the utilization of the heated air for heating purposes.
A further object of this .invention is to provide novel means in conjunction with a furnace and a gas-burner located within the furnace whereby the supply of cool air may be taken from a point outside the furnace and 'mixed with the incoming gas and to provide means for controlling the supply of air so supplied.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, coi'nbination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which-- lfigure l isa side elevation of my ilnproved furnace, partly in 'vertical section. Fig. 2 is a transverse. sectional view taken on the line :t of Fig. l, the top part of the furnace being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a part of the gas-burner.
lhe improvements as contemplated by me are applicable to different types of furnaces, and in the accompanying drawings l have illustrated a furnace wherein a hot-air chamber, combustion-chamber, and ash pit are shown, and throughout this application l have shown my improvements in connection with a furnace of this type; but I do not care to limit myself to the exact type of furnace shown, but may embody my improvements in any form of furnace wherein the elements above mentioned are employed.
l'n the accompanying drawings the reference-numeral l designates a furnace wherein gas or coal is adapted to be employed asa heating medium.

The combustion-chaniber 3 is in communication with a flue 6, from which the waste products are conveyed to a suitable stach or chimney. (Not shown.)
The reference-nunieral .7 designates a gasburner with which the gas-supply pipe 8 communicates, this pipe being provided with a valve 9 to control the inlet of gas. Between the gas-burner 7 and the gas-inlet pipe is mounted a casing 8', and in this casing the ends of the burner and the gas-supply pipe are secured. Mounted in the casing adjacent to the end of the supply-pipe is a nozzle 10, which protrudes within the burner 7 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Communicating with the gas-burner 7. is a pipe 1l, which extends outwardly and upwardly to one side of the furnace-(floor lf2, said pipe then extending` inwardly toward the center of the furnace and is connected to the pipe la, which extends transversely of the furnace and communicates with the exterior thereof. The pipe lilA is provided with adamper l5, which is operated by a handle 16, that extends without the furnace to one side of the furnace-door f1.2, and by the use of this damper the flow of air to the gas-burner may be controlled.
By the construction oli' my improved fur nace the cold air or air surrounding the furnace is conveyed to the gas-burner through the transverse pipe let and the pipe ll., where it comi'ningles and .is forced into the burner by the gas passing through the nozzle 10. By maintaining the burner in communication with the cold air surrounding said furnace a draft is obtained which will at all times assure a perfect combustion of the gas, a thon ough commingling of the air with the gas, and a perfect heating medium. By taking the supply of air from the exterior of the furnace the components of the air are retained at the time the air is mixed with the gas, and

the heat which is produced by the burning of the gas m the presence of this air is of a materially higher degree than is possible Where manner of constructing' my improved furnace and the manner of arranging the cold-air pipe, l do not care to limit myself to this specific construction, as the transverse pipe la may be arranged at different angles with respect to the combustion-chamber and various types of burners maybe employed in connection With the furnace.
lt will be seen that by my noyel arrangement of furnace I employ hot air with the gas, and thereby produce more complete combustion than can otherwise be obtained. Furthermore, by first heating the cold air before it is mixed the gas Will generate a greater amount of heat, and l thereby obtain advantages that will be readily appreciated when the accompanying drawings are referred to.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hot-air furnace having a combustionchamber, and a hot-air chamber located directly above the combustion-chamber, a burner arranged in the combuStien-chamber` a fuelsupply pipe extending through the wall of the furnace and communicating With said burner, an air-supply pipe mounted Within the Walls of the furnace with its opposite ends in free communication with the atmosphere exterior of the furnace, a pipe Within the combustionchamber establishing communication between said air-supply pipe and the burner, and means in said pipe extending outside the furnacewall for controlling the air admitted to the burner, substantially as described.
