Abstract
The acid number of an alkyd resin which may be considered to derive from a polycarboxylic acid, a polyhydroxy compound, and a monocarboxylic acid is lowered by reacting the resin with a monoepoxy compound having a boiling point above 100 DEG C. and containing a terminal epoxy group as the sole reactive group. An epoxyalkyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid is the preferred type of epoxy compound. This monocarboxylic acid may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or mixed aromatic-aliphatic, e.g. lauric, myristic, palmitic or stearic acid, but is preferably an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having a tertiary or quaternary a carbon atom, e.g. one prepared by reacting an olefin with formic acid or with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a liquid acid catalyst Monoglycidyl compounds are preferred. The alkyd resin is preferably one in which the monocarboxylic acid component is unsaturated, and preferably has an acid number initially below 50, and finally below 25. The reaction with the monoepoxcy compound takes place below 300 DEG C., preferably at 150-250 DEG C. In examples a mixture of glycidyl esters of C9- 11 branched monocarboxylic acids are heated at 240 DEG C. with a commercial castor oil/phthalic anhydride alkyd resin in xylene, and with a phthalic anhydride/pentaerythritol/linseed oil or a phthalic anhydride/glycerol/linseed oil resin in a low aromatic white spirit. The products are compared with the untreated resins by determining the drying times of films of solutions of the resins, with naphthenate driers, in low aromatic white spirit, and by determining the miscibility of the resins with linseed stand oil.
