Abstract

1,043,953. Cutting by fusion. H. R. MORGAN, M.I.Mech.E. Jan. 15, 1965, No. 1857/65. Addition to 1,017,254. Heading B3V. Apparatus for flame cutting a hole in a main tube 32, to which a branch tube is to be joined, comprises a flame cutting torch 35 mounted on a rotating and axially movable shaft 12 driven from a crank-shaft 1 whose crank 3 is interconnected with a guide system 4, 5, 6 for producing axial movement of the crank-shaft 1 as it is rotated. The crank-shaft 1 is driven by worm gearing 24, 25 and spur gearing 18, 24B. Crank 3 has a socket engaging a ball 4 on an arm 5 of an armshaft 6 adjustably disposed, with respect to the axis of the crank-shaft, at the same angle as the branch and main pipes to be joined. The ball joint may be replaced by a Hooke's coupling as disclosed, in Specification 1,017,254. Crank-shaft 1 is biased by spring 11 and drives the shaft 12 through gearing 18, 20, 20A and flanges 14, 13A for transmitting the axial movement. Torch 35 is guided by linkage 35C, 35D, 35F and ball joint 35E. The apparatus may be adjusted for different sizes of tubes, as described in Specification 1,017,254. In another embodiment, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), the crank 3 carries a freely rotating ball which co-operates with the surface of a cylinder mounted on the shaft 6.
