Abstract

A transparent electrode for an electroluminescent lamp consists of particles of indium oxide, or of glass fibre coated with indium oxide, forming at least 10% by volume of the electrode, uniformly dispersed in a transparent organic plastic, preferably a cyanoethyl cellulose; the electrode having a light transmittance of at least 60% at a film thickness of 15 micron. In a flexible electroluminescent panel described, a phosphor, e.g. ZnS, ZnO; Cu, Cl, Mn, is embedded in a polymer layer, 8-25 micron thick, with on one side an insulating layer of barium titanate in a plastic, and a 55 micron layer of aluminium, and on the other side a transparent electrode, and a dessicant layer, e.g. of a poly-amide condensation product such as nylon; the whole being sealed between outer sheets of plastic, e.g. a halide polyethylene. The transparent electrode may be 2.5-15 micron thick, and may be backed by a reticulate conducting web of fine wire cloth &c., or by a conducting glass paper.
