Abstract
1,043,125. Microwave housings. CSFCOMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Feb. 27, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8306/64. Heading H4A. In order to prevent reflection of microwaves at a wall A of a housing for a microwave transmitter and/or receiver, the characteristic impedance of the wall is matched to that of free space by attaching to one or both sides of the wall a plurality of layers of dielectric material B, C, D of decreasing effective dielectric constant from the inner layer B to the outer layer D, e.g. 2À8, 2 and 1'4 respectively when the dielectric constant of the wall is 4, an effective dielectric constant of 1'4 for the outer layer D being obtained by machining slots or holes in a homogeneous layer of dielectric constant 2, the separation between slots being less than the shortest wavelength. The wall may comprise a radiation transparent portion of stratified glass and an opaque metal part E, Fig. 2 (not shown); in the latter case a layer of microwave absorbing material A<SP>1</SP> is interposed between the wall and the inner layer B of dielectric material.
