Abstract

1,042,943. Track laying tractors. P. ANTONETTI, and A. DAMIANO. March 12, 1963, No. 9682/63. Heading B7H. A track laying tractor for towing a skier or a sledge comprises a pair of metal or plastic sideplates 1 connected by one or more crossmembers 2 and carrying driving and supporting rollers 7, 9 for an endless-track 10 which, together with the side-plates 1 encloses a twostroke petrol engine 16 and a gear-box and clutch housing 17. The side-plates 1 may also carry a jockey roller 8, either the jockey roller, as shown, or the roller 9 being spring-loaded to maintain track tension. Guides 6 are provided on the side-plates 1 for supporting the inner edges of the endless track 10 between the rollers 7, 8, 9. A carburetter, ignition system and a starter are mounted on or adjacent the engine 16, or externally of one of the side-plates 1. Skis 25 may be connected to the tractor by cords 23 or by rigid towbars having ball-jointed connections at each end. The endless track 10 consists of a rubber or plastic moulding formed integrally with external ribs 15 and internal ribs 13 for engagement withgrooves 14 in the rollers 7, 8, 9. Alternatively the endless track 10 may consist of a leather belt having separate ribs riveted thereto, or may be of link construction. A keel 3 is provided on each side-plate 1 whereby the tractor can be steered by handles extending therefrom or by engaging ski-sticks 25 with brackets 11 on the side-plates. A throttle and/or clutch cable 19 extends from the tractor to the skier, or the throttle, clutch and gear-box may be controlled by the ski-sticks 25. A fuel tank 20 may be carried by the skier in addition or alternatively to a fuel tank on the tractor.
