Abstract

1,042,878. Bearings; seals. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. Nov. 12, 1962 [Dec. 5, 1961], No. 43539/61. Headings F2A and F2B. A seal 16, Fig. 1 (not shown), for a roller bearing comprises an inner flange 18 mounted as an interference fit on a rib 12 of an inner race 11, a body portion 19 which extends radially outwardly from the flange 18 and an outer flange 20 which has a radially inwardly extending portion 21 having a rim 22 curved outwardly, the rim 22 being so disposed that it makes close clearance relationship with the adjacent ends of rollers 14 and with the raceway of an outer race 10. In an embodiment, a flinger 17 is intermediate the seal 16 and the rib 12 and an additional seal 26 of resilient material is fitted in an annular space formed between the flinger 17 and the seal 16; alternatively, the seal 26 may be replaced by grease. In modifications, the rim 22 may be flanged outwardly or otherwise suitably beaded, and the seal 16 and the flinger 17 may be integral.
