Abstract

Alkyl halides are made by reacting a monohydric alcohol, or a mono-ether thereof, with a halogen acid at 150-500 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising alumina and silica in a molecular ratio of 0.01 : 1 to 50 : 1 respectively and having a surface area of from 50 to 800 m.2/g. and an average pore size less than 30 mm . Specified starting materials are methanol, ethanol and propanol and HCl.ALSO:A catalyst comprising alumina and silica in the molecular ratio 0.01:1 to 50:1 respectively is characterized in having a surface area of from 50-800 m2/g and an average pore size of at least 30 mm . The catalyst may also contain an alkali metal oxide in amounts of 0.01-1.0% by weight.
